Aims and activities

A group of funders formed a learning and action community to embed Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) throughout their work. Over two years, they built a body of practice which is now available for the whole sector to benefit from.

The DEI Coalition met regularly throughout 2020 and 2021, with the following objectives:

  • Encouraging the sharing of DEI best practice and resources within foundations and more broadly to the philanthropic sector
  • Enabling teams to develop expertise in this specialist area, with the support of others
  • Enabling foundations to use a DEI lens in developing grant-making priorities or programme areas
  • Empowering foundations to build a supportive organisational and inclusive culture that leads to effective grant-making, more inclusive systems and better representation
  • Disseminating the latest research, evaluation, and data in relation to DEI as a tool for learning and impact across the foundation sector
  • Providing a protected and safe space to discuss challenges, barriers and difficulties in the implementation of practice.

My hope is that other foundations will also be inspired to prioritise this work and see it as essential in ensuring we are effective funders, our grant-making reaches those most in need and we model the values and inclusion we expect from the sector
