Clare Beavan, Foundation and Community Investment Manager at DWF Foundation, discusses the benefits of being a member of funder peer networks, including Women Leaders in Corporate Foundations and the Merseyside Charitable Trusts Group.

In the world of philanthropy, collaboration is more than a buzzword - it's a necessity. As funders, we often work behind the scenes, supporting causes and communities with the hope of creating lasting change. But no matter how strategic or well-resourced we are, we can’t do it alone. That’s why being part of different funder networks has been one of the most enriching and impactful aspects of my professional journey.

Funder networks offer a unique space for shared learning, collective problem-solving, and strategic alignment. Whether it's through peer learning, policy influence, or joint funding initiatives, these networks amplify our individual efforts and help us stay grounded in the realities of the communities we serve.

In philanthropy, collaboration is key. Being part of funder networks has deepened my understanding, expanded my reach, and strengthened the impact of my work. Some examples of networks I have been involved in include:

Women Leaders in Corporate Foundations

The Women Leaders in Corporate Foundations network aims to share insights, strategies, and best practices related to managing and growing corporate foundations. The group focuses on various aspects such as strategic planning, growth, fundraising, and impact measurement.

Through the network, I connect with inspiring peers who are redefining corporate giving with purpose and equity. It’s a space for honest dialogue, shared challenges, and bold ideas.

Merseyside Charitable Trusts Group

The Merseyside Charitable Trusts Group is a group of independent grant-makers supporting communities in the Liverpool City Region. A group of independent grant-makers supporting communities in the Liverpool City Region.

On a local level, the network has been vital for aligning efforts and responding quickly to community needs. It’s where funders come together to listen, learn, and act - especially in times of crisis.

These networks aren’t just about connection - they’re about collective action. Together, we’re more informed, more responsive, and more effective.  Working together helps us all move beyond isolated giving and toward a more connected, informed, and responsive approach to philanthropy.

As the challenges facing our communities grow more complex, the need for collaboration becomes even more urgent. Funder networks are not just about sharing best practices - they’re about building trust, aligning values, and working together to create systemic change.

They help us align our work, adapt, and amplify our impact. And in a world of complex challenges, that kind of collaboration is more important than ever.  I’m proud to be part of these communities and excited about what we can continue to achieve together.
